The Other Side of Horse Racing Philip Nork 9781490317946 Books Reviews
Living in Las Vegas, it's not unusual to come across individuals that fight addiction on a daily basis. I've heard them all video poker addicts, slot machines, black jack. Never before had I heard of someone addicted to horse racing. Bobby was introduced to the races at an early age and quickly caught the betting bug. This is a tale of how he struggled to be successful at the track and his life. Bobby's lows will pull at your heart and you will find yourself praying that he can get help. I recommend this read to anyone who has struggled with gambling addiction, and for those looking for insight as to how to help a loved one in this situation. Great job, Mr. Nork!
The prologue immediately sets the scene by introducing Ben, the leader of a Gamblers Anonymous chapter for 30 years, and a former gambler himself.
“To most of these people, it started out as an escape and turned into a nightmare they never could. This is the story of one such man.”
As readers meet Bobby Tucker when he is sixteen going to the horse racing track for the very first time, they will easily connect to the young protagonist, with the foreshadowing of the prologue in the back of their minds.
“…his story can be anyone’s story…and it needs to be told.”
Readers will follow Bobby from sixteen to his manhood, with all the ups and downs of his life as his gambling habit takes hold. They will alternate from being sympathetic to getting angry at him, witnessing what a gambling addiction can do to a person, but throughout they will never stop rooting for him to turn his life around.
The author skillfully keeps readers never quite sure if the conclusion will be a positive one or not for this young man, which holds their involvement in this compelling story to the very end.
My favourite type of book! Realistic characters with depth, solid settings and a great story coupled with a strong theme, underpinning the book, without being intrusive. Because of how much I identified with the main characters, this book's message really packs a punch.(As an aside, writers who have a strong message they want to get across, look at how this writer does it, by keeping the message, behind the plot, not the other way round).
The story follows a shy boy's descent into gambling. Nork captures the thrill and drama of the race track, the individual but always electric atmosphere of different tracks and the divide between the public stands and the private enclosures, the professional gambler, those directly involved in the sport and the pundits who enjoy an occasional flutter on a great day out.
The power of the story comes from Nork's insights into a young man who feels isolated and inadequate and mistakes the excitement and extreme highs and lows of gambling for confidence and self respect. Despite all the warnings, Bobby is convinced he will beat all the odds and be different. On the days he wins, he is indestructible, popular, and all the things he dreamed of being. He quickly learns on the days he loses he is full of self-loathing and doubt. He remains in denial and desperately seeks one more win to gain self-respect, without realising he's hit the self-destruct button. Only when he hits rock bottom and is shown compassion by an ex-gambler can he find the strength to truly win.
I highly recommend this book, which will remain with me for a while.
The Other Side of Horse Racing by Philip Nork
Enjoy learning about horses and have yet to ride one but want to learn more about them.
Enjoy the Derby and other races in May but more about finding out about the people who train them and ride them.
Gambling is an escape and ends up being an addiction. Bobby Tucker grew up with no father, those he loved had died. It's best to just go on by himself he thinks.
Love that it explains all the terms about betting and place the horse comes up at the end of the race.
Strikes up friendships with some ladies and pops. Different track where the horses run got him unnerved and things just aren't right...
Loved hearing all the stats, percentage wise about the different tracks and horses. Wind and drafting totally makes sense!
Word gets around among the teens and they use him for his winning bets.
Time goes on and things go horribly wrong on all counts. After graduation he goes with his father to live in FL. He hopes to remake himself and be more outgoing.
He gets a job and once again you wonder if he's done with gambling.
Tough love sets in and you hope he will wake up from his nightmare....Love the opportunity that is offered.
Lots of twists throughout this book, left you guessing what could happen next.
Received this copy from the author and this is my honest review.
This is the first book I read on and the first book I've read about the risks, Torment And inevitable losses from horse racing and gambling Which I must admit I have experienced & Am challenged by. It was easy and helpful to read. The idea of living for your next bet is enlightening. Might make a heluva movie!
I recommend this book. It is a must read!! The book is like a self help as well as telling the story about how the horses affected one man.
I have never been to a horse race or gambled on one. Enjoying this book. Learning a lot about the ins and outs of horse racing. The author has made it very interesting.
